How long can a Wisconsin injunction last?

The maximum duration depends on the type of injunction and the statutory findings. Domestic-abuse and harassment injunctions have different statutory provisions, and certain circumstances may permit longer periods than the ordinary maximum.

The court may issue an injunction for a period shorter than the statutory maximum if the circumstances warrant. The duration is stated in the injunction order and the respondent remains bound until the order expires, is modified, or is vacated by the court.

A temporary restraining order is different from the final injunction. A TRO is generally short-term relief designed to remain in effect only until the injunction hearing or another statutorily authorized date.

Because Wisconsin has amended injunction-duration provisions over time and special rules may apply in particular cases, the current statute should be checked when determining the maximum available term.
